The assumption that Jesus existed as a historical person has occasionally been questioned in the course of the last hundred years or so, but any doubts that have been raised have usually been put to rest in favor of imagining a blend of the historical, the mythical and the theological in the surviving records of Jesus.
Carrier re-examines the whole question and finds compelling reasons to suspect the more daring assumption is correct. He lays out extensive research on the evidence for Jesus and the origins of Christianity and poses the key questions that must now be answered if the historicity of Jesus is to survive as a dominant paradigm.
Carrier contrasts the most credible reconstruction of a historical Jesus with the most credible theory of Christian origins if a historical Jesus did not exist. Such a theory would posit that the Jesus figure was originally conceived of as a celestial being known only through private revelations and hidden messages in scripture; then stories placing this being in earth history were crafted to communicate the claims of the gospel allegorically; such stories eventually came to be believed or promoted in the struggle for control of the Christian churches that survived the tribulations of the first century.
Carrier finds the latter theory more credible than has been previously imagined. He explains why it offers a better explanation for all the disparate evidence surviving from the first two centuries of the Christian era. He argues that we need a more careful and robust theory of cultural syncretism between Jewish theology and politics of the second-temple period and the most popular features of pagan religion and philosophy of the time.
For anyone intent on defending a historical Jesus, this is the book to challenge.

Con theorising in excelsis. This has been debunked innumerable times - by secular, atheist, agnostic & religious academics alike (particularly, New Testament scholars). Too many contemporaneous accounts extant. No serious scholar supports the myth theory, while it does bounce about online, on the frenetic, fanatic fringe.
But, as ever, if you upload it, they will come…

There was no Jesus. There are no credible facts to support “his” existence. Stories concocted hundreds of years after the fact are not evidence.

There isn’t a single shred of evidence of Jesus’s existence.
Not a single one.
@Caesar963 You say it has been debunked by academics from different religious backgrounds, but you don’t mention a single shred of evidence that Jesus existed. If we go by personal accounts, then Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy also exist. In truth, there’s more evidence that Santa Claus existed than of Jesus.
The Roman Empire, which was meticulous in keeping records, made no reference to Jesus during the time he was supposedly alive and crucified. Not a single one. But I don’t have to tell you that, Caesar963. You already knew, but the fact angers you, so you have to deny it with hearsay.
Do not give poor ratings to audiobooks because they make you feel uncomfortable and question your fragile belief system.

Take that caesar963! By out of handedly rejecting the fruits of the very peer review system itself as well as proffering a buffoonish sham of rational thought as an illustration your underlying logic here, all it took was to hang ill intent around your neck and you were… eh I dunno? If not proven wrong and not credibly discredited, or even told off. Told to, I guess? Yeah so people have emotions against what your years of diligent study has shown you to be solidly the case so you can stick that in your pipe and smoke it OK :p.

Thanks for the upload. I just knew the windbag defender of the faith, would spew some waffle on this :)

Christ probably did exist… as an amalgam of many charismatic Jews who strode the land as active revolutionaries against the Roman rule. Think Abbie Hoffman in a robe with sandals. The book of Revelations was actually a thinly disguised allegory re the Roman colonization of Judea.

Christ ‘probably’ did exist. ? No he most certainly did not. And in 2000+ years no one has been able to prove he did.
“Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt”…
The ‘why we might’ question is an example of people pandering to religion and tip toeing around so we do not offend the Sunday school indoctrination dogma.
The sooner we stop pandering and coddling kookie delusional religious weirdos, the sooner we can have a functional society based on science and merit.
If they had been told and taught the truth when they were 6 years old, we would not have all the problems we have now. The grown up need to confront and denounce religion everywhere we find it.
The rules and rule of god has lead to million of deaths and thousands of wars. Let’s end religion in our country and in our life time.

“might” have reason? Just more weasel words from a fringe theorist

I’ve seen no evidence other than the bible said so. In addition Christians have been caught lying, like with the Josephus forgery & bogus artefacts - BEHOLD THE IPHONE OF JESUS!!!
As for the biblical scholars consensus - argument from collective authority, not to mention conflict of interest. Evidence is all that matters.
If I’m wagering, my money’s on, yes there probably was a historical Jesus. Why not, they had a new messiah every week promising to Make Judea Great Again MJGA.
I don’t care - no skin in the game. Just a curiosity to me. People who have real faith in Jesus don’t care about this either since the very definition of faith is belief without evidence.
If you need to go to the Discovery Institute’s silly ‘Answers in Genesis’ site looking to disprove scientific findings, like evolutionary theory et al, with pseudo science then methinks you lack faith & are suffering some seriously uncomfortable cognitive dissonance.

Faith in Jesus is really quite simple. It goes like this:
Have you heard the good news(gospel)!?
Listen & if you are moved & believe, then congratulations you now have the gift of faith & can look forward to an end of suffering in the afterlife. Yes it really was that simple.

We think of the key, each in his prison.
Thinking of the key, each confirms a prison.

… Have you heard the good news(gospel)!?
Or in real life: Have you heard the good news?
Well give us your money (credit cards authorized) or simply mail your check… and we will share the word of god…

I dont get ceasar some times. Sometimes he seems like he is a very intelligent individual that comes down on the side of science and reason and academic scholarship. Then there are times like this, where its like, uh wtf? I am not sure what academics he must be talking about. I think the guy you find on Ancient Aliens and other History channel shows. Because academics most definitely do not think Jesus was an absolutely real historical character. They would all tell you there is ZERO evidence for a real jesus. Where are these academics of yours in this case? Ehrman? Ya, Ancient Aliens like i said. Does that mean this guys theory is right? No, but it could be. There isnt any evidence to prove a real jesus, not from an academic/scholarly perspective. And why do you need one? What does it matter if some guy 2000 years ago was named Jesus. This kind of question belongs in the domain of archeology/history not theology.

what disturbs me is that Christians seem to believe that jesus is the ultimate “get out of jail free” card for doing the most unspeakable acts of evil. if you believe you will be saved, you can be evil incarnate, and you will still be saved! Not that the godless status quo of far left communist statism is any better, but perhaps we should cherish some of what our pre-christian ancestors held sacred, and learn from their mistakes!

Has anyone heard the previous books on scientists and science education in the early roman empire? Are they as good as this one?
November 11th, 2023
never heard of this before, but is so good, I used to read some of weird “historic” jesus books from my dad but they were antisemitic propaganda. this is really really good!
