For decades, Mark Juergensmeyer has been studying the rise of religious violence around the world, including groups like ISIS and Christian militias that have been involved in acts of terrorism. Over the years he came to realize that war is the central image in the worldview of virtually every religious movement engaged in violent acts. Behind the moral justification of using violence are images of great confrontations of war on a transcendent scale.
God at War explores the dark attraction between religion and warfare. Virtually every religious tradition leaves behind it a bloody trail of stories, legends, and images of war, and most wars call upon the divine for blessings in battle. This book finds the connection between religion and warfare in the alternative realities created in the human imagination in response to crises both personal and social. Based on the author’s 30 years of field work interviewing activists involved in religious-related terrorist movements around the world, this book explains why desperate social conflict leads to images of war, and why invariably God is thought to be engaged in battle.

What is there about God and warfare that someone needs to write a book about? SIMPLE: God is against war, except for the ones He directly ordered in the past, but does not now do, because we don’t live in an Old Testament theocracy.
Now we just have a bunch of people and politicians who want to force other countries into our way of thinking and doing, so go to war against them, and then call it God’s will.

War is about power, resources, territory & fear. For the cannon fodder? Well, we’ll just tell them that it’s for national pride, or some other ideology. It doesn’t really matter, because most are doing it for a salary. Desperation money. Or they are being compelled. Or for excitement. Or adventure. The real psychopaths just want to murder and rape.
As far as youngsters looking for religious warrant for their actions: simply recall the prospective jihadis, prior to boarding their flight, in the airport bookstore, hurriedly grabbing copies of “Islam For Dummies” and leaving a record of the purchase on their credit cards. Religious motivations? Questionable, at the very least. Possibly seeking some formal veneer for action.
And their use for the power brokers & commanders at their final destination? Well, unless they have a background in the armed forces, engineering, or a related field - just more cannon fodder. A potential human bomb of some description. Then you have all of these spare copies of “Islam For Dummies” lying around, a book marker still at chapter one.

Simple: God does NOT exist and religions are inherently divisive, intolerant and the cause of some of the World’s most terrible wars.

Simple! I don’t think the issue is existential or metaphysical in this particular context. The book is about the aggravating factors in war.
No, the most terrible wars in all of human history (WWI, WWII, the 100 Years War, the French Revolutionary Wars, the Seven Years War, the Napoleonic Wars, events during the ideological Cold War - Korea, Vietnam, myriad Marxist invasions & revolutions, British Imperial wars of rapacious conquest & greed, all other imperial wars, the Peloponnesian War, etc. etc.) were not caused by religion.
Wars exist - have always existed - without religion necessarily. People are divided & intolerant. The Nation State, and its predecessor, the tribal system, facilitate wars on the most massive scale.
The causes (again) are not mysterious. Power, resources, territory & fear.

The vet killed my puppy, I need some animal afterlife books please

You seem to have a cause of action against that grossly negligent vet (unless the killer was an unquiet veteran?). Oddly enough, somebody seems to be uploading a humongous store of such books in just the last 2 days. They’ll put you in touch with the little tyke in a numinous minute.

I love that He directly ordered wars in the past!

Should be “War on God and God is losing”…Thank God!!!???
Athiests Rule!! Soon
August 8th, 2020
An estimated 7% of the world population? With no civilisation ever founded on ideological atheism? Still, youse had a great run during the 20th century Dark Age - Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, North Korea, Eastern Europe, Angola, Ethiopia, all that evil ideology, love of elaborate military uniforms, war, hatred & genocide. Atheists did indeed “rule” don’t forget.

If not religion, then ideology - any pretext will do. At the heart of it, all wars are resource wars.
Thanks, daenigma100

Well, crap. For the second time in as many days, I find myself in general agreement with Caesar. Brutus forced to sheath his dagger. (You did leave out the American Civil War in your list of the most terrible wars. Roughly 655,000 dead (not counting civilians) should certainly qualify.) Not as much as Russia’s Time of Troubles, or Stalin’s follow-up purges, but it really ought to be on the list. To me, the “role” of God in war is in the proclamations, usually from both opposing parties, that God is on their side. Or, as a once-famous and oft-misquoted Crusader put it: “Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.”

Oops. in between “oft-misquoted” and “Crusader” should be “Albigensian.” Small oversight on my part.
