In a radical new vision for the future of Christianity, NYT bestselling author and conservative columnist Rod Dreher calls on American Christians to prepare for the coming Dark Age by embracing an ancient Christian way of life.
The light of the Christian faith is flickering out all over the West, and only the willfully blind refuse to see it. From the outside, American churches are beset by challenges to religious liberty in a rapidly secularizing culture. From the inside, they are being hollowed out by the departure of young people and a watered-down pseudo-spirituality. Political solutions have failed, as the triumph of gay marriage and the self-destruction of the Republican Party indicate, and the future of religious freedom has never been in greater doubt. The center is not holding. The West, cut off from its Christian roots, is falling into a new Dark Age.
The bad news is that the roots of religious decline run deeper than most Americans realize. The good news is that the blueprint for a time-tested Christian response to this decline is older still. In The Benedict Option, Dreher calls on traditional Christians to learn from the example of St. Benedict of Nursia, a sixth-century monk who turned from the chaos and decadence of the collapsing Roman Empire, and found a new way to live out the faith in community. For five difficult centuries, Benedict’s monks kept the faith alive through the Dark Ages, and prepared the way for the rebirth of civilization. What do ordinary 21st century Christians — Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox — have to learn from the teaching and example of this great spiritual father? That they must read the signs of the times, abandon hope for a political solution to our civilization’s problems, and turn their attention to creating resilient spiritual centers that can survive the coming storm. Whatever their Christian tradition, they must draw on the secrets of Benedictine wisdom to build up the local church, create countercultural schools based on the classical tradition, rebuild family life, thicken communal bonds, and develop survival strategies for doctors, teachers, and others on the front lines of persecution.
Now is a time of testing, when believers will learn the difference between shallow optimism and Christian hope. However dark the shadow falling over the West, the light of Christianity need not flicker out. It will not be easy, but Christians who are brave enough to face the religious decline, reject trendy solutions, and return to ancient traditions will find the strength not only to survive, but to thrive joyfully in the post-Christian West. The Benedict Option shows believers how to build the resistance and resilience to face a hostile modern world with the confidence and fervor of the early church. Christians face a time of choosing, with the fate of Christianity in Western civilization hanging in the balance. In this powerful challenge to the complacency of contemporary Christianity, Dreher shows why those in all churches who fail to take the Benedict Option aren’t going to make it.

hehehehehe…he’s right.
Humanity in the 21st Century will end all religion as God/Allah do not exist and the various “churches” have done (and are doing) terrible harm to society.
Religion is on its last legs and needs to end.

Maybe. What men create will pass away. However, I’m not certain that God doesn’t exist. I have never seen the proof, only conjecture. We assume that our vision and hearing are very good. But they are not. We cannot always see and hear everything that is all around us. But, it is there.
Thanks for the upload. That is, after all the whole point of ABB, is it not? Thanks and appreciation. Cheers!

Clearly Dreher is an intelligent man of insight and vision. That being said, I don’t know that I agree with everything that Dreher suggests, as traditional marriage is no longer being held up by the US Supreme Court, indicating that Christians have lost the culture war, and should therefore seek a community life that is more closed off to the rest of the world, that it might flourish again.
Obviously, we have no idea just how much we are effected by the mass media, smart phones, the Internet, and screens in general, in terms of the life of the mind, body and soul, and I think Dreher does well to bring this out, as well as the devastating court decisions, but America has pretty much been disestablishing the church ever since its conception. Of course he is correct that Christians have a responsibility to teach their children church history and theology, and that we need to try to ease off our dependence on so much of our technology in favor of cultivating a more family centered and Christian community based life (Apple actually had a conference on this very issue). I’m just not convinced that June 26, 2015, represents the fatal blow to America’s Christian heritage, as bad as it was. Dreher discusses a lot of things here, but this is what I feel to be at the heart of this book.
If you study the history of the separation between church and state in legislation, the courts, executive decisions, and in isolated issues in both local and state governments, not to mention the plethora of government offices, it is a long and bumpy road, going back and forth in favor and out of favor with the church, or certain churches, because even there, one church may favor prayer in school, while another wants complete and total disestablishment.
Bravo for great literature such as this. I’m giving this book 3 stars, and recommending it at the same time, because I think it is actually worth reading, regardless of my disagreements. ;)

Pretty funny to contrast this with the view of another far-right Christian saying the opposite:

And this guy talking about a “hostile modern world” and “the front lines of persecution.” Is he living in Iran? Christians in the West who complain about “persecution” usually mean they can’t impose their morality on everyone else.

We can’t be entirely certain that you exist, “Exp’d” - although you are appropriately named!
If you need an object lesson in the terrible harms and sadism of which human beings are more than capable, look no further than the toxic atheistic regimes of the 20th Century - a Dark Age in truth.
Organised faith is in decline in some parts of the world; but theism itself enjoys overwhelming support. Always has, in fact.
As far as its contributions: education, hospitals, human rights - and the reason you (hopefully) have any sense of morality in your head at all, is due to religion. In the West, we’re living off the fumes of that morality, and, like thankless children, hate to acknowledge its origins.

We shouldn’t allow evil people to be the ethical benchmark. That includes hypocrites who wear a religious mantle.
Great book, rmoor. St Benedict’s efforts created Europe as an entity. Such constructive building has to be undertaken by decent people, otherwise the worst of us will engineer more dystopic systems in which to enslave humanity.

American Christianity has become a deeply evil enterprise. Their primary focus has been a commitment to hate, and what they teach is that the point of their religion is to harm their neighbors. Their institutions will continue to decline unless they can completely reverse their direction. I doubt they will, and frankly, good riddance.
