The biblical origin story, Greenblatt argues, is a model for what the humanities still have to offer: not the scientific nature of things but rather a deep encounter with problems that have gripped our species for as long as we can recall and that continue to fascinate and trouble us today.

@LOAugly - I don’t think that’s the premise of the book, in all fairness. “Non-fiction” is an appropriate rubric for the study of the phenomenon. I think that users of the site tend to get a little too trigger-happy regarding uploaders’ descriptions of their books.

Only timeless, vital, essential truths - like the dignity, value & beauty of the individual human soul; the crucial, fundamental importance of all human life; separation of Church and State; love your enemy; that all souls are equal; the emptiness of mere materialism; value your parents and virtuous tradition; tell the truth; don’t take the side of the strong against the weak; the Sermon on the Mount…
But I’m more of a New Testament type of chap - like Chesterton: ‘The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.’
Simplistic understanding is not understanding. Or, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” Proverbs 4:23.
