In A.D. 381, Theodosius, emperor of the eastern Roman empire, issued a decree in which all his subjects were required to subscribe to a belief in the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This edict defined Christian orthodoxy and brought to an end a lively and wide-ranging debate about the nature of God; all other interpretations were now declared heretical. It was the first time in a thousand years of Greco-Roman civilization free thought was unambiguously suppressed.

THANK YOU!
I highly dislike any organized religion, but the description is so fascinating that I just had to download and seed it, and hope it proves enlightening - and suspect/hope it will demonstrate how silly the whole idea is once and for all.

Thanks so much, Euripides - I’ve appreciated Charles Freeman’s Classical histories in the past.
Of course, we should realise that Christianity was not as doctrinaire as a Roman Emperor may once have wished. It developed in discrete ways across Christendom. Celtic Christianity was different from the North African manifestation, for instance.
Greek reason influenced writers and theologians, from Augustine (Plato); to Aquinas (Aristotle) and all points between and past. Philosophical speculation never ceased, and these Classical texts were prized, pored over and recopied for over a millennium in Catholic monasteries and universities.
