America’s problem with race has deep roots, with the country’s foundation tied to the near extermination of one race of people and the enslavement of another. Racism is truly our nation’s original sin.
“It’s time we right this unacceptable wrong,” says bestselling author and leading Christian activist Jim Wallis. Fifty years ago, Wallis was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered dealing with racism to be taboo. His participation in the civil rights movement brought him back when he discovered a faith that commands racial justice. Yet as recent tragedies confirm, we continue to suffer from the legacy of racism. The old patterns of white privilege are colliding with the changing demographics of a diverse nation. The church has been slow to respond, and Sunday morning is still the most segregated hour of the week.
In America’s Original Sin, Wallis offers a prophetic and deeply personal call to action in overcoming the racism so ingrained in American society. He speaks candidly to Christians — particularly white Christians — urging them to cross a new bridge toward racial justice and healing.
Whenever divided cultures and gridlocked power structures fail to end systemic sin, faith communities can help lead the way to grassroots change. Probing yet positive, biblically rooted yet highly practical, this book shows people of faith how they can work together to overcome the embedded racism in America, galvanizing a movement to cross the bridge to a multiracial church and a new America.

I gotta tell you, this never ever gets old… I am NOT saying slavery was okay or acceptable in any way, but slavery has been a part of every single country’s past. The fact that it was such and incredibly SMALL part of America’s history should be celebrated.
I didn’t own any slaves, my parents didn’t own any slaves, my grandparents didn’t own any slaves, my great grandparents didn’t own any slaves. Tell me again why I should have white guilt?
Instead, we should be rounding up everyone that tries to keep this country divided by keeping this ancient sin at the forefront of every issue.

Are you kidding? Slavery not a big part of our history? How do you think the United States got the huge economic jump start that allowed us to burst onto the scene in contrast to other colonial powers. While it is true that none of your family was involved, you tow a very dangerous line by attempting to down play its importance.

Slavery was a shame. We ended it quickly and should have moved on. The real noteworthiness of slavery was how Lincoln used it for a power grab and to incite the bloodiest war ever and keep the country split to this day.

You did not “end it quickly”. Slavery in the US lasted over 300 years and the US was the second last country in the world to end slavery.

Nope. 245 years, which is a blink compared to the thousands of years (all the way to current day) of slavery in Africa. Not a blink compared to England’s 271 years, but still a blink compared to England’s almost two thousand year history of doing business with slave owning countries.
Some fun facts:
The Arabs have owned more slaves than America ever did.
Of the 10 to 15 million Africans who were transplanted to the New World, no more than 6 percent—around 400,000—went to the Northern Hemisphere. Almost all of them went to South America
1.6 percent of whites owned slaves. Some research has shown that as many as 28 percent of free blacks owned slaves.
Look up Irish and Barbary Slavery. How many whites are still going on about how their great, great, great, grandparents were slaves?
I detest slavery and would slap a racist down without thinking twice, but even more I detest this false assertion that America was the cause of slavery, misses slavery or was the longest slave owner. That crap gets old. Time to move on.
If you want to focus on something, let’s focus on the sex trafficking that is taking place all over the world to our daughters and sisters of all colors.

Here’s a fun fact I just learned:
When General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, it had been nearly 20 years since Lee owned slaves—he freed his slaves in the late 1840s. In 1856, five years before the Civil War started, he wrote that slavery was “a moral and political evil.” On the other hand, General Grant STILL owned slaves at the end of the Civil War, because Abe Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation cleverly outlawed slavery only in the South. Grant had stated that he would refuse to fight if he thought the war had anything to do with slavery.

Not Racist: That’s simply not true. You need to do more research before you go on spouting historical untruths and bogus contemporary implications:

‘Not-Racist’– even that name puts me off. Ususally if people say that, then they should just shut up right there. As if you could belittle this original sin with comparisons to slaveries throughout history. Shame on you, shame, shame, shame- hope you listened to this audiobook as you are misinformed and part of the problem.

The authors summary want to make a bridge to a multiracial church. As if that is a new thing. I I am 45 years old only been to church maybe 15 times. Always different churches. And I have never been to a NON-multi-racial church. Every church I have ever seen has been integrated. This author must have been exposed to very limited upbringing. Glad he opened his eyes a bit. But it seems now he is applying is former limited view and applying it to the rest of humanity. Not realizing that his view is still the limited view. While many of his subjects are valid. His interpretation seems flawed in general.

Might want to read that fact link that you so nicely linked to us. It in fact states the TOTAL OPPOSITE of what you stated. Stating that people with an agenda or with ignorance post this on the internet or previously in print, every few years. That it is documented the Grant knew slavery was dead and he was for making sure that it stayed dead. Earlier than the Emancipation.
